Motorcycle Accidents: What You Should Know

Driving a motorcycle isn't like operating any other kind of vehicle. The rush you get as a motorcycle driver is undeniable. Unfortunately, so are the risks that come with driving them. Despite only 3% of road users being motorcyclists, in 2021, there were 3,712 motorcycle accidents in North Carolina. 210 of those accidents were fatal. That means that in one year alone, dozens and dozens of families lost loved ones due to motorcycle crashes. Often, these tragic accidents aren't caused by mistakes the motorcycle rider makes. They're due to another driver's negligence.

In the event of a motorcycle accident, the probability of sustaining significant injuries is considerably higher, as even the most effective motorcycle gear can only offer limited protection. In collisions with other vehicles, we have no protection. Furthermore, the other vehicle involved in the accident will likely be much larger, increasing the chances of injury or even fatality. Although the other driver's insurance may cover some of the expenses for your medical bills and motorcycle repairs, their insurance company will make every effort to minimize the amount they have to pay. Carl Nagle is a former claims adjuster and former insurance company lawyer. He knows how to oppose insurance adjusters and avoid the insurance company's efforts to minimize your injury claims. If you've been injured while riding your motorcycle, you deserve generous compensation – but without the help of a Motorcycle Accident Injury Attorneys, you may only get a fraction of what you need.

If you've been injured in a motorcycle accident as a result of someone else's negligence, you are entitled to pursue compensation for your damages, injuries, and losses. Typical Motorcycle Crash Injuries in North Carolina

It doesn't take a graduate from Highland School of Technology in Gastonia, NC to know that talking about roadway crash injuries is an uncomfortable subject. That's especially true when motorcycles are involved, because they're often the most gruesome and fatal.

Here are just a few of the most common types of injuries that motorcycle drivers recover from:

When you are hit in a motorcycle crash and fall off your bike, you often skid on the road surface, causing lacerations, abrasions, and severe skin damage.

Serious head injuries are both common and severe in motorcycle crashes. Wearing a helmet can reduce the risk of damaging your brain or skull, but it's not a foolproof solution. Severe traumatic brain injuries often occur, even when bikers wear full face helmets.

Accidents involving motorcycles often result in internal injuries like harm to organs, internal bleeding, and injuries to the abdomen or chest.

Injuries to your spinal cord can vary in severity, ranging from minor contusions to the spinal cord to severe damage that can result in paralysis or lifelong disabilities.

Motorcycle collisions frequently cause fractures and joint injuries, such as joint dislocations and broken bones in the legs, ribs, arms, and pelvis.

Motorcycle accidents have the potential to cause a range of psychological injuries, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which can manifest as intrusive thoughts, nightmares, and hypervigilance. Motorcycle crash victims may also experience heightened anxiety, characterized by feelings of unease, restlessness, and worry.

Though motorcycle drivers must wear helmets in North Carolina, headgear can only do so much for you when you're hit by another motorist. Injuries can vary from small cuts and bruises to serious facial damage, such as dental injuries and harm to the jaw or eyes.

Nagle & Associates Pro Tip

In the immediate aftermath of a motorcycle accident, there are some general rules you should follow. Think before you speak. Don't accept guilt, even if the crash was your fault. Avoid sharing details on social media or discussing your case with anyone except your Motorcycle Accident Injury Attorneys in Gastonia, NC, or your doctor. Lastly, refrain from making any statements to the media if they show up at the scene.

After a turbulent several years, Party City is reportedly planning to shutter all stores, including the store in Franklin Square Shopping Center in Gastonia.

According to reports from CNN, Party City's CEO Barry Litwin told corporate employees in a Friday meeting that the company is "winding down" operations immediately, and that today would be their last day of employment.

This left staff without severance pay, and with benefits ending as soon as the company goes out of business. Here's what to know about the company's bankruptcy, plus closures in North and South Carolina.

Why is Party City closing?

After initially filing in January 2023, the company exited bankruptcy a month after new CEO Barry Litwin's arrival, now about four months ago, CNN reported. The company was able to cancel nearly $1 billion in debt by declaring bankruptcy. It also managed to keep most of its over 800 stores open, though over 80 locations were closed between the end of 2022 and August 2024, according to recent financial documents.

Even with that debt canceled, the chain still faced $800 million in debt, straining earnings for the year. Combined with competition from online retailers such as Amazon, and seasonal pop-ups like Spirit Halloween, the company was unable to overcome their financial problems, CNN reported.

People who need a place to stay warm for the night when temperatures fall will be able to visit the First United Methodist Church.

GASTONIA, N.C. — Neighbors in Gastonia who need a place to stay warm on cold nights will have a new location to visit starting Friday.

The City of Gastonia and Gaston County jointly announced Thursday that the First United Methodist Church of Gastonia has committed to hosting the Cold Weather Shelter to give unhoused neighbors a warm place to sleep when temperatures are projected to fall to 32 degrees or lower. The church, located at 190 East Franklin Boulevard, will host the shelter for the first time on Dec. 20, starting at 8 p.m. and going until 6 a.m. The shelter will be housed inside the church's Family Life Center.

“We are immensely grateful for Pastors Justin and Melissa Lowe and the entire team at First United Methodist Church of Gastonia for stepping up to provide this critical need,” Gaston County Assistant County Manager Steve Eaton said. “They truly have a heart for service, and their partnership is the perfect example of how local government and members of our community can work together to better serve those in need.”

“Our collaboration with FUMC Gastonia and Gaston County demonstrates what can be accomplished when our community comes together to support our most vulnerable,” said Quentin McPhatter, assistant city manager of Gastonia. “We remain dedicated to working hand-in-hand with our various community partners in meeting this need.”

The church will provide cots and blankets for the shelter. Community groups like Gateway Gaston, HealthNet Gaston and the United Way of Gaston County are still working to provide food, clothing and other essentials for unhoused neighbors. Law enforcement officers are also being provided to handle security at the warming shelter. Both the city and county governments are also working to provide and recruit volunteers to staff the shelter.

The city and county previously hosted a warming station at the Gastonia Farmer's Market, and warming stations have been provided for three years now.

Individuals and groups looking to donate to support the work of the Cold Weather Shelter can do so through the United Way of Gaston County.

Who doesn't dream of striking it rich playing the lottery? For some Gaston-area residents , the dream really did come true in 2024. Here's a look at some of those winners.

Robert Moore

When Robert Moore of Dallas made a routine trip to the store earlier this month, he shocked his wife when he returned with some groceries and a $2 million scratch-off win.

“She asked me to run to the store,” Moore recalled. “She wanted me to pick up some vegetables.”

When Moore got home with his ticket, he handed it to his wife to scratch.

“She said, ‘You need to come in here,’” Moore remembers. “I could not believe it.”

Moore, a retired veteran, bought his lucky $20 Win Big ticket at a Walmart on Dallas Cherryville Road in Dallas and won the first $2 million top prize in the new game.

When Moore arrived at lottery headquarters, he had a decision to make. He could choose to receive the prize as an annuity of $100,000 over 20 years or a lump sum of $1.2 million. He chose the lump sum of $1.2 million and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $858,006.

Moore purchased a brand-new pickup truck only a week before claiming his prize and plans to use some of his winnings to pay it off.

Pablo Bustamante

Pablo Bustamante of Gastonia took a chance on a $10 scratch-off ticket and won a $1 million top prize in October.

Bustamante bought his lucky 50X The Cash ticket from Triple E Express & Grill on Bessemer City Road in Gastonia.

Bustamante had the choice of receiving the prize as an annuity of $50,000 over 20 years or a lump sum of $600,000. He chose the lump sum, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $429,003.

Mary Young

Mary Young of Lincolnton tried her luck on a $50 scratch-off in August and won a $1 million prize.

Young bought her lucky $10 million Spectacular ticket from Silver Express on East King Street in Kings Mountain.

Young opted for the lump sum of $600,000 and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $429,014.

Melvin Brooks

Melvin Brooks of Stanley saw that a friend won a nice prize playing the new $400,000 Jackpot game so he tried his luck in June and won the first $400,000 top prize in the game.

“I saw a friend’s post that he won $100 on that scratch-off so I decided to try it,” Brooks said.

He bought his lucky $5 ticket from Circle A Food Store on North Main Street in Mount Holly.

“I was with my cousin when I scratched the ticket in the parking lot,” he said.

Brooks said they went out to celebrate after he won.

Adrin Anthony

Adrin Anthony of Kings Mountain planned a magical trip for his family after winning a $100,000 scratch-off prize in April.

“We are planning to take our kids to Disney World,” he said when he won. “We can use this win to help pay for that.”

Anthony bought his lucky $10 million Spectacular ticket from the Southern Store 101 on E. Church St., Cherryville.

“At first I just stopped in to buy a drink,” he said.

Anthony said he always told his wife he would win big one day.

“I’ve been telling her for years I was going to win,” Anthony laughed.

After required federal and state tax withholdings, he took home $71,514.

Marvin Gaddis

Martin Gaddis of Gastonia took a chance on a $5 scratch-off and won a $250,000 prize in March.

Gaddis bought his lucky 20X The Cash ticket from Rai Marts on North New Hope Road in Gastonia.

After required state and federal tax withholdings, he took home $178,751.

Joshua Ramsey

Joshua Ramsey, of Gastonia, always dreamed of buying a house and his $250,000 lottery win in February helped make that dream come true.

“This is life-changing for us,” Ramsey said.

Ramsey initially went to Mike’s Food Store on South York Road in Gastonia to buy a drink, but ended up buying a $5 20X The Cash ticket too.

“Something was just telling me to get that ticket.,” Ramsey said. “I’m sure glad I did.”

Ramsey won the first top prize in the scratch-off game. He said he, "was absolutely blown away" when he saw how much he won.

“I started shaking all over,” he recalled. “It’s one of those experiences you’ll never forget.”

After required state and federal tax withholdings, he took home $178,751.

Julian Macaulay

Julian Macaulay, of Mount Holly, bought a $3 Quick Pick with Power Play ticket online in January and won a $100,000 prize.

He matched the numbers on four white balls and the red Powerball to win $50,000 in the Jan.10 drawing. His prize doubled to $100,000 when the 2X multiplier hit.

After required federal and state tax withholdings, he took home $71,501.
