During the 2010-11 fiscal year, 879 cases were filed in the state for texting while driving, and three years later, that number increased to 2,018 cases.

Exceptions

North Carolina’s law allows drivers to text while behind the wheel as long as the vehicle is lawfully parked or stopped, such as at a stoplight. While driving, the law allows drivers to look up phone numbers, type in numbers and look up addresses. The law also allows drivers to look at social media sites while driving as long as they’re not typing in text, and drivers are also permitted to scroll through their music library on a phone or other mobile device.
