A pair of former White Oak High School Vikings and a former longtime high school basketball coach will be new members of the Providence Bank Jacksonville-Onslow Sports Hall of Fame.

The Jacksonville-Onslow Sports Commission released the names of the 2025 class, and Doug Banks, Doug Erny and Greg Grantham will be inducted alongside the 2026 class during a ceremony in the spring of 2026.

According to the Jacksonville-Onslow Sports Commission, the hall of fame honors “those who have advanced sport in Onslow County.”

Here is a look at the 2025 class. The Daily News will feature all the inductees leading up to next year’s event.

Banks attended White Oak from 1972 to 1975, where he played baseball, basketball, football, and competed in track and field.

In football, he was named team Most Valuable Player as a junior and senior, was a three-time all-conference player and two-time all-county performer. As a senior, Banks was named the area’s player of the year and all-state, and played in the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas and N.C. East-West All-Star game.

Banks helped White Oak win two conference titles in football. He finished rushing for over 3,000 yards.

Banks was named team MVP and all-conference in baseball multiple times and was also a team MVP in basketball. He was also team MVP for the track and field team as he competed in the 200 and 400-meter hurdles and long jump.

Banks then played football at North Carolina and East Carolina before signing with the Carolina Chargers of the World Football League.

Erny attended Jacksonville from 1980 to 1984 and played baseball and basketball.

He was an all-conference baseball player in 1983 and graduated from East Carolina after high school. Erny was hired to teach at Brewster Middle aboard Camp Lejeune in 1988.

He then spent 23 years coaching aboard base. As boys’ basketball coach, Erny won over 400 games, advancing to the 1-A East Regionals in 1993, 1994, 2002 and 2006. He was a four-time conference coach of the year while with the Devilpups.

He was named boys’ basketball coach at Jacksonville in 2013, helping the Cardinals to two 20-win seasons.

Grantham was a senior on Southern Wayne’s state championship basketball team in 1980 before playing at Mount Olive Junior College and Coker College.

After coaching at Rosewood and SouthWest Edgecombe, he became White Oak’s basketball coach in 1993 and later the school’s athletic director.

Grantham’s basketball teams won over 370 games, including over 310 at White Oak, with five conference championships and sectional titles in 1996, 1997 and 2002.

Following retirement, Grantham became the first Coordinator of Athletics for Onslow County Schools.

Grantham has held various roles and has earned a number of awards. He was the Associated Press North Carolina basketball Coach of the Year in 1995, received the NCHSAA’s Charlie Adams Distinguished Service Award in 2012 and named one of the “100 To Remember” AD’s by the NCHSAA in 2013, among many others.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – A career-high six goals from Owen Duffy paced fourth-ranked North Carolina (6-1) over Jacksonville (5-3), 20-7, Saturday at Dorrance Field.

How It Happened • Jacksonville scored the game's first goal, answered by six-straight from the host Tar Heels, who led 7-3 after the opening quarter. In the opening 15 minutes, Mason Szewczyk, Owen Duffy, Caden Harshbarger, Spencer Wirtheim and James Matan hit the back of the net for Carolina. • The Tar Heels outscored the Dolphins 6-2 in the second quarter, taking a 13-5 edge into the halftime break. • Carolina's defense posted a scoreless third quarter on the defensive end, with two Dominic Pietramala scores and a goal from Ty English pushing the Tar Heel lead to 11 after the third, 16-5. • Duffy, Parker Hoffman, Colin Hannigan and Matt Wrede capped off the game with fourth-quarter goals, giving Carolina a 20-7 victory.

Tar Heel Performances • Duffy led all players with eight points (six goals, two assists). • Pietramala, English, Matan and Wirtheim each scored twice, as Carolina had 11 different goal scorers. • Brady Wambach (18-26), Hannigan (3-4) and Caden Whaling (0-1) helped Carolina win the faceoff battle on the day. • The Tar Heels collected 39 ground balls, with Wambach's 14 leading the way. • Michael Gianforcaro and Kent Goode combined for 12 saves between the pipes.

Inside The Numbers • Carolina has won all three matchups in the series, by a combined score of 49-19. • Duffy's six goal showing was his third career game with five-or-more goals. The six goals was a career-high for the sophomore. • Duffy's eight-point performance was one shy of his career best. • The Tar Heels have won the faceoff battle in six games this spring. • Wambach's 14 ground balls was a career-high, the third most by a Tar Heel in a single game. • In the last four games, Wambach is 74-99 (.747) at the faceoff X.

THE MATCHUP: Ohio State Meeting for just the second time in program history, the Buckeyes have won the lone meeting before Friday. This will be the first game between the two programs since 1998 when Ohio State beat NC State, 10-4.

THE MATCHUP: Alabama Saturday's game between the Crimson Tide and the Wolfpack will be the seventh meeting between them, but only the second time during the regular season.

NC State is 4-2 against Alabama. The first meeting came in 1968 in game one of the District three Championship. The last regular season game between the two schools was March 5th, 2016, when NC State won 2-1. THE MATCHUP: Coastal Carolina With a 21-14 record in the series with the Chanticleers, the two programs will be meeting for the first time since 2023, which saw a 16-4 victory by the Wolfpack.

The first meeting was in 1987, when Sam Esposito's Wolfpack won 9-6. Under head coach Elliott Avent, NC State is 10-8 against Coastal Carolina.

The Wolfpack will look to get back in the win column after dropping a midweek clash with Liberty. Leading the Wolfpack with an impressive .625 batting average after four games, Justin DeCriscio ranks fourth nationally and first in the ACC with a remarkable .813 on-base percentage. DeCriscio is one of three NC State players to have hit safely in all four of the Wolfpack's games this season.

Chris McHugh will look to continue his hot start to the season. McHugh delivered a standout performance in his fourth start, recording two hits, three RBIS, and his first double of the season. He currently ranks 17th nationally and second in the ACC with nine RBIs on the year.

The weekend rotation for the Wolfpack remains the same as on the opening weekend when the Pack swept Fordham. Fritton, Andrews, and Marohn combined for 17 strikeouts, just five walks, and seven hits allowed against Fordham.

Andrew Shaffner and Andrews got their first collegiate wins during the opening weekend. Shaffner came on in relief in game one, pitched 3.2 innings, and only allowed three hits and no runs.

In his second career start, Andrews pitched a career-best 5.0 innings, allowing two runs on two hits and five strikeouts, which is also a career-high.
