Joshua Baird has always been a proud NC State alumnus, but he took his talents to Carolina to pursue a Master of Public Administration degree from the UNC School of Government.

“I joke about that switch, but Carolina’s program is top-notch,” said Baird as he sipped from his NC State water bottle.

He earned two degrees from NC State, a 2009 bachelor’s degree in zoology and a 2014 master’s degree in biological and agricultural engineering, with a concentration in environmental engineering and a minor in water resources.

Baird learned about Carolina’s MPA program from participating in the school’s trainings and workshops with local governments. “I had completed courses that the School of Government offered, and I knew the expertise and resources that were there,” said Baird.

He knew he wanted to work in local government and dedicate himself to a specific community. He wanted to use his engineering expertise to enhance infrastructure, implement environmentally sustainable practices and ensure the town’s water and sewer utility is both efficient and fiscally responsible.

Currently, Baird serves as the water resources director for the town of Clayton. He oversees the planning, organization and direction of water and sewer utility operations, ensuring efficient service delivery, regulatory compliance and environmental stewardship. His responsibilities include long-range planning, budget preparation and infrastructure management for water supply, treatment, distribution, metering, wastewater collection and water reclamation.

“Clayton is rapidly growing and with that comes challenges. We seek to find solutions and look at a problem and say, ‘What are we going to do about this? What are the alternatives? What is the best path forward here?’” said Baird.

For Baird, the MPA program allows him to gain practical knowledge and expertise he can use in his career immediately. The courses on capital finance, leadership, professional communications and public administration provide skills he can use daily in different scenarios.

After graduating from Carolina’s MPA program later this year, Baird wants to continue growing in his current job and serving the people of Clayton using skills from the program.

“This is an opportunity to bring different areas of my background together to figure out what’s best for the town and residents that we serve,” said Baird.

Maybe he’ll even add some Carolina Blue to all that NC State red.

North Carolina is wasting NO time getting this highly-touted big man to campus!

According to Inside Carolina, Henri Veesaar has scheduled an official visit to North Carolina. The 7-footer is expected to be in Chapel Hill on Wednesday, just a day before the dead period begins.

It's important to note that communication can continue during the dead period. The rule indicates that no campus visits can occur from April 3 to April 11, as communication and financial negotiations will still be happening during that time. However, that contact must be initiated by players or their representatives: coaches and schools aren't allowed to start those conversations.

Veesaar officially entered the transfer portal on March 31, as North Carolina was quickly linked as a team to watch in his recruitment. Now, it appears that there is a very strong mutual interest between the two sides, as the Tar Heels made it a priority to get him on campus before the dead period came into effect.

A 7-footer from Tallin, Estonia, Veesaar spent his first two collegiate seasons at Arizona. Although he only started five games this past season, Veesaar's production took a massive leap during his sophomore season. He averaged 9.4 points and 5.0 rebounds per game, showcasing his versatility by adding an additional 1.3 assists and 1.1 blocks per contest.

Don't let his size fool you: Veesaar can shoot the basketball. He can stretch the floor a bit, coming off a season in which he knocked down 16 of his 49 attempts from three-point range, and has proven to be an effective player in the pick-and-roll game.

North Carolina needs size and athleticism, two things that Veesaar can bring to the table. While there will be quite a few big man options available via the transfer portal, it appears that Veesaar sits atop the Tar Heels wish list, as they'd love nothing more than to secure a commitment from him before he departs Chapel Hill after his visit comes to a close.

While the Tar Heels have plenty of needs to address this offseason, adding a high-level big man sits atop the program's to do list. Adding Veesaar would be a major addition for the program, as early signs seem to indicate that North Carolina is in a strong spot in this particular recruitment.

Now, it's time to close the deal by convincing Henri Veesaar that North Carolina is the best place for him to continue his collegiate career.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.—Theadora Rabman won the clinching singles match as fourth-ranked North Carolina topped No. 62 SMU, 4-0, on Friday afternoon at the Chewning Tennis Center. The win completed a busy week for Carolina, which played four home matches in an eight-day span.

The Tar Heels improved to 16-4 overall and 7-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference with the victory, bouncing back nicely from Wednesday's 4-2 loss to No.9 Duke. The Mustangs fell to 9-11, 3-6 ACC.

Reese Brantmeier and Alanis Hamilton, ranked 20th in the nation, cruised to a quick, 6-1, win at No. 1 doubles over Sophie Llewellyn and Caroline McGinley to start the day. Several minutes later, the ninth-ranked duo of Carson Tanguilig and Susanna Maltby topped Ellie Pittman and Drew Morris, 6-2, at No. 2.

Carolina got singles wins from Brantmeier, Hamilton and Rabman to claim the team victory.

The ninth-ranked Brantmeier dispatched Llewellyn, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles for a 2-0 Tar Heel lead. Hamilton then won, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 5 over Kayla Schefke to make it 3-0. Rabman completed the day's play with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Morris at the No. 2 slot.

"Coming off a loss is always difficult, especially a loss against Duke, so we challenged these guys to respond," assistant coach Hayley Carter said. "I think that showed today. Even in matches where we were down, we were coming back, won some second sets, were coming back in some other seconds. I'm really proud of the group and the fight they showed after a tough match."
