Charlotte Legal & Court Information

Charlotte metropolitan area had a population in 2009 of 1,745,524. The Charlotte metropolitan area is part of a wider thirteen county labor market region or combined statistical area that has an estimated population of 2,389,763.  Charlotte and the county containing it is the busiest legal community and court system in North Carolina.

Charlotte and Mecklenburg County lies in the 26th Judicial District in North Carolina.  Charlotte and the surrounding metro area  is home to more lawyers than any other city, including the capital city of Raleigh.

Accident lawyers in Charlotte litigate personal injury cases in Mecklenburg County Superior or District Court, or in the United States Federal District Court.   For cases brought in the NC State Court system, personal injury trials take place in either the District Court (where smaller cases are tried), and in Superior Court.  Our firm litigates personal injury cases exclusively in our state Superior Courts and in the federal court system.

The state courts for Charlotte and the surrounding area are located at the Mecklenburg County Courthouse at 832 East Fourth Street, Charlotte, NC 28202.   The Charlotte, NC Clerk of Superior Court is Martha Curran, and the current Senior Resident Superior Court Judge is Honorable Robert P. Johnston.   All Charlotte court and judicial offices are located at this address, and at the nearby Mecklenburg County and Courts Office Building at 720 East Fourth Street, Charlotte NC 28202.

Charlotte accident lawyers who litigate personal injury cases in federal courts use a different court system entirely.   Charlotte resides in the Western District of NC for the federal court system, and this federal district handles cases from Asheville, Bryson City, Charlotte and Statesville court divisions.  The Charlotte division federal courts are located in the Chalres R. Jonas Federal Building located at 401 West Trade Street, Charlotte NC 28202.  Federal courts are the proper venue for accident lawyers who bring large claims arising from catastrophic accidents against drivers and companies who reside outside of North Carolina.   Smaller cases (where damages are less than $75,000.00) against non-residents must be brought in our NC State Courts.

Tractor trailer and truck accident cases are common examples of injury cases filed and tried in federal courts.   These cases often involve serious injuries, and the responsible drivers and trucking companies typically reside outside our state and are simply transporting cargo when accidents occur.  Some Charlotte accident lawyers only handle only trials brought in the state court system.  Thus, the victim should be certain that their injury lawyer stands ready to prosecute their personal injury case in federal court if that is the proper venue.
